Marife Hogan, known to the glass bead making community as “Rifie”, migrated to Sydney from the Philippines in 1987.

As a youngster, her creativity surfaced in music, dancing, drawing and poetry. Although Rifie was encouraged creatively by her parents their practical influence prompted her to opt for a career in science. Rifie put herself through university and now holds a Bachelors  Degree in Nursing.

Her passion for the arts was re-kindled when a co-worker introduced her to the art of jewellery making in July 2005. The following year, April 2006, she enrolled in a Beginners Glass Bead Making class with Kathryn Wardill. Two months later she undertook an Intermediate class, again instructed by Katherine Wardill. Rifie is a visual learner and believes in accelerated learning. To date she has attended classes by Brenda Coleman (vessels), Bernard Stonor (off mandrel sculptural techniques) and the master Japanese teacher Akihiro Ohkama (ton-bo-dama murrini making). Rifie also currently frequents the glass bead forums Lampwork Etc and Australian Glassbeadmakers Guild for networking, glassy ideas and an active participation in bead challenges/exchanges.

So far, Rifie’s achievements in glass art bead making includes:-
~ being published in 2008 for a book entitled Bead Review 3 for signature bead “mice from space” design in the newcomer section;
~ winning second place 2008 in South Carolina USA, for her alien bead design/submission for the “watermelon festival”,
~ being published in the 2008 calendar of The Australian Glassbeadmakers Guild,
~ being published online The Annealer Magazine spring 2007 New Babe Lampworker and
~ being published in the second issue 2007 of The Annealer Magazine for an article she wrote about the glassbeadmaking movement in Australia.

Rifie is passionate about flame working and has given up her full-time job as a Registered Nurse to concentrate in glass since May 2007. She continually strives to develop her own unique designs in sculpting glass art beads (both soft and hard glass), and strongly believes in having her own voice in the glass community.
