Paperweight Making at Yandina Hot Shop ~ 7th November 2009

An introduction to the hot shop and glass blowing. You will be working with one of our resident artists to use pipes, glory holes, the furnace, frit etc., and to make a small paperweight!!

Introduction to Glass Beadmaking (Level 1) ~ By arrangement ~ Yandina, Queensland

These beginner classes are exactly that, an introduction to glass beadmaking and an opportunity to test and play with this amazingly versatile medium. Class fee includes all materials, use of equipment, tuition and class notes. Prior to commencement of tuition a safety talk will be given covering topics outlined below . Tuition will be tailored to suit the class but will include instruction and demonstration of many different techniques as time and aptitudes permit.

Verbal introduction (extensive notes provided to each student) covering

• Annealing & Compatibility
• Glossary of Terminology
This class will cover the following techniques:
• Pulling Stringers
• How to wind a basic bead
• Beginning to decorate with dots using both full rods and stringers
• Placement, correct application and control of dots
• Twisted Dots
• Stacked Dots
• Poked Dots (trapping an air bubble)

Making Basic Beads (Level 2) ~ By arrangement ~ Yandina, Queensland

Prerequisites:
Introduction to Glass Beadmaking (Level 1) or equivalent (i.e. at least 6 hours previous torch time and understanding of equipment, tools, health and safety guidelines)
Class time: To suit you but generally between 9.30am to 3.30pm weekdays, weekends are possible, again by appointment.
Cost: $180.00 per day (9.30am to 3.30pm), $100 per half day (3 hours) OR by the hour by arrangement @ $45 per hour.
This class aims to continue to build on the skills introduced at Level 1 as well as to consolidate what has already been taught. Class fee includes all materials, use of equipment, tuition and class notes. Tuition will be tailored to suit the class but will include instruction and demonstration of many different techniques as time and aptitudes permit.
This class will cover the following techniques:
• Understanding heat and gravity as tools
• Winding and shaping good base beads consistently
• Using the marver - introduction to barrels and bicones
• Pulling consistent stringers and stringers of different sizes
• Pulling a basic twistie cane
• Masked Dots
• Dot patterns using surface tension
• Raised dots versus melting in

New Ideas In Shape And Pattern (Level 3) ~ By arrangement ~ Yandina, Queensland

Prerequisites:
Introduction to Glass Beadmaking (Level 1) AND Making Basic Beads (Level 2) or equivalent (i.e. at least 12 hours previous torch time and understanding of equipment, tools, health and safety guidelines)
Class time: To suit you but generally between 9.30am to 3.30pm weekdays, weekends are possible, again by appointment.
Cost: $180.00 per day (9.30am to 3.30pm), $100 per half day (3 hours) OR by the hour by arrangement @ $45 per hour.
By now you have an understanding of some easy to achieve shapes and maintaining control of those shapes whilst applying pattern using dots. You have enough control to either leave your patterns raised or melt them in. In either case, dots are relatively evenly sized and placed. You can consistently make a well shaped base bead and maintain the shape as well as melting patterns into the bead. You can also re-shape a bead using only heat and gravity. You are ready for some new ideas! Class fee includes all materials, use of equipment, tuition and class notes. Tuition will be tailored to suit the class but will include instruction and demonstration of many different techniques as time and aptitudes permit.
This class will cover the following techniques:
• More bead shapes using marvers, heat and gravity
• More twisties and cane
• Using twisties and cane
• Raking and feathering
• Striped, triangle and pleated beads
• Encased cane
• Raised cane patterns

Easy & Effective ~ An Introduction to Frits and Foil (Level 4) ~ By arrangement ~ Yandina, Queensland

Class time: To suit you but generally between 9.30am to 3.30pm weekdays, weekends are possible, again by appointment.
Cost: $180.00 per day (9.30am to 3.30pm), $100 per half day (3 hours) OR by the hour by arrangement @ $45 per hour. *NOTE: Surcharge of $25 applies in relation to foils and frits.
You have been working hard to gain control of the heat both on your base beads and in the patterns which you have applied to same. You have a good understanding of where and how to direct the heat to achieve your desired shapes and patterns, whether raised or flush. You are beginning to achieve control of your stringer designs and are able to execute simple designs with some success. You can consistently make beads of similar sizes and shapes. Now you need some more torch time to practice these skills, but at the same time you are looking for some fun! Class fee includes some materials* (See note above), use of equipment, tuition and class notes. Tuition will be tailored to suit the class but will include instruction and demonstration of many different techniques as time and aptitudes permit.
This class will cover the following techniques:
• Introduction to frit and frits
• Making and using frit stringer
• Introduction to silver foil and wire
• Silvered stringer
• Silver foil, to burn or not to burn
• Andrea Guarino’s ‘Salmon Egg Bead’
• Reactive silver and some great effects
• Silver and frit - a reactive combination!
• Gold, palladium and other fru fru

Cost: $180.00 per day (9.30am to 3.30pm), $100 per half day (3 hours) OR by the hour by arrangement @ $45 per hour.
This is a time to consolidate all of your learning, before moving on. You should by now have developed considerable control and be able to shape beads and place patterns with reasonable consistency. In this final Session at ‘Beginner Level’ we will add a few sculpting and forming exercises as well as encasing to your skills list.
This class will cover the following techniques:
• Encasing
o Dot Encasing
o Striping
o One-Step
o Flat
• Hollow beads
• Beginning sculpture
o Hearts
o Fish
• With or without a mandrel!?
o Off mandrel hearts and pendants

Introduction to Glass Beadmaking (Level 1), Making Basic Beads (Level 2), New Ideas in Shapes and Pattern (Level 3), Easy & Effective (Level 4) or equivalent AND at least 12 months of experience making beads on a regular basis. Understanding of safety issues.
Class time: To suit you but generally between 9.30am to 3.30pm weekdays, weekends are possible, again by appointment.
Cost: $220.00 per day (9.30am to 3.30pm), $130 per half day (3 hours) OR by the hour by arrangement @ $55 per hour.

Using Bead Presses (Extras 1) ~ Yandina ~ By arrangement

Using brass presses is a skill unto itself. Learning how to get the right amount of glass in the right places with or without additional patterns takes a bit of practice! This is an opportunity to play with a variety of presses and to develop your skills in this area. The tutor will work at your pace and tailor the class to your personal needs, however, we recommend that you complete Next Step (Level 2) prior to enrolling. (Maximum of 8 students per class)

Stringers, twisties and complex cane (Extras 2) ~ By arrangement ~ Yandina, Queensland

There are a huge variety of canes, both complex and simple, that can be made to further enhance your beads. Even making stringer in the right thickness for the right application is an exercise in heat control. This session is an opportunity to explore some of the possibilities! Latticino, ribbon, ribbon with threads, rainbow ribbon......all you need is imagination!!

Murrini can be made in numerous styles to further adorn and embellish the beads you make. This session explores some of the many possibilities using murrini moulds and freehand styles.
